Well specced PC August 23, 2010 pbg Received the computer the day after ordering. It was small, well packed and quick to setup. Windows 7 was fine - easy to setup apart from some network sharing options. Unfortunately it had Norton pre-installed and it took a few reboots to finally get rid of it.
The machine is very quick (esp. compared to a Pentium 4 - down from 3 hours to rip and convert a DVD to 45 mins). It runs almost silently, only getting a bit noisy when running at full tilt for over an hour. The mouse and keyboard are nice, although the keyboard has less travel than I like. The mouse is nice, and it has an off swicth to save the batteries. Definitely recommended, especially at the reduced price.
Everything I needed August 13, 2010 PJ Rankine (Wallington, Surrey United Kingdom) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I haven't bought a pc since I bought my first Packard Bell with 2mb of ram and a 20mb hard drive because I have since built and upgraded my own and my sons'. This time realising my trusty machine needed upgrading I discovered that it is no longer cost effective to build your own especially when Windows 7 cost eighty quid on its own. I use mine for browing the net, storing and editing photographs, home accounting and playing music. This machine fits the bill perfectly, the quad core processor lets me browse the net and listen to iTunes without loss of performance and obviously the 4GB of ram helps. The fan is much quieter than my old pc and the case is smaller so it fits neatly into the same spot however I keep mine on the floor to the right of the footwell on my desk so it is difficult to get to the eject bottom for the dvd drive as HP have put it on the right edge set back from the facia. Apart from that I have no complaints at all. Although my network is hard wired I was impressed with the wireless antenna which in my house boosted the wireless signal from 1 to 5 bars. This machine ships with a wireless mouse and keyboard combination which works from a small wireless dongle. I already have a Microsoft wireless mouse and this is a much neater option but I'm still not sure about the keyboard. Yes its good to have no wires hanging off the back but I find the keys too close together and I have small hands. My wife thinks its very smart being black but I suspect my Microsoft ergonomic keyboard will be making a re-appearance soon. Overall this is a very nice computer that fulfils all my home computing needs.
HP Pavilion Desktop Computer August 13, 2010 Doug After a few teething problems and I am still undergoing a learning curve with this machine but all in all I am very pleased with this product.
nice body, shame about the face August 9, 2010 Grafixit (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Overall a good solid build, that responds well and is reasonably well equiped.
I would prefer more USB connectivity, particularly on the front panel and more system information. Also I lament the lack of power out for monitor connection on base units today, this unit is no different.
Why the moderate rating? The PC arrives in a box with no operating manuals, no software discs and depends on self made system back up, along with online manuals, which can be printed if required. This assumes all is well when switched on, a reasonable level of computing experience, and access to print hardware, which will need current drivers for Win 7.
When Amazon were approached as the retailer, there representitive 'Michael' has proved to be dogged in trying to source manuals and system discs from HP, sadly to no evail, but thanks for trying.
I am also not a fan of bundled software and 'Trials', and removed Norton's time hungry software, replacing it with kapersky courtesy of Amazon's retailers. Office 2007 trial was already out of date and no registration codes were currently available; removed and Open office installed at no cost.
Slowly but surely the PC is being 'tuned' to my needs for general research, music and photography, with some word processing thrown in. The HP PC is very capable of providing me with an upto date system which responds quickly, capably and with sufficient storage for now ( I have partitioned the drive, rather than one large C drive)
My thanks to Michael at Amazon who has proven that despite the system, aftersales service is possible.
Great Desktop for the cash!! August 7, 2010 Mr. Roger Holmes (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought this as a replacement for a laptop that never moved from the desktop!! Windows 7 is good..so much better than Vista, and the package is fast and reliable. Memory is good for the money and the chip is a good balance between fast and efficient.SATA hard drive expandable also. I use this for music media and watching video. Cannot really fault it..except if you need a 1934 connection ..it doesn't come with this so had to install one myself. easy. The keyboard/mouse is wireless..and the computer too..bonus! Looked long and hard for this spec which suits the home well.Noticed its just gone up in price from the 400 notes i paid. well done Amazon, good service too on free delivery.Teamed it with a good spec acer monitor.
