archive best buy August 20, 2010 dave l 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an excellent product. Set up straight out of the box. Although it has a single pre formatted partition I wanted to create two. This is easy to set up with Vista but be warned, it took 25 hrs. This in no way reflects on the equipment, it`s simply due to the huge capacity of the disk. As I use the drive purely for archiving and back up an added bonus is that the drive does not automatically start up with the computer as a lot of USB devices do. This means less wear and tear as it isn`t running until you need it. Again well worth the money and if I ever fill it up (unlikely) I`ll be having another.
External 1.5TB August 17, 2010 C. Jackson (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I use these drives to archive video footage and so far they have done exactly that.
No access or format issues and easy to use on MACs.
Perfect drives for my use and as usual a perfect delivery from Amazon.
Verbatim 1.5TB usb external hard drive REVIEW June 21, 2010 A.C (England, West Midlands) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
ADVANTAGES
+ Large capacity hard drive, allowing you to store around 250 4.7GB DVD movies
+ Good passive cooling with cooling slots back and bottom
+ Very easy to use, just 1 on/off switch, 1 usb port and 1 power socket
+ Good transfer speeds of around 1GB per 1.5 minutes writing to hard drive
+ Nice and bright green activity LED on the front panel
+ Reliable 7200rpm Samsung hard drive inside
+ Good exterior - shiny matt black finish
+ Comes with very useful and easy to use Nero BackItUp software, which allows you to make scheduled back ups when required
+ Four rubber feet on the bottom panel for increased stability and prevention of surface damage
+ The hard drive feels bulky and robust
+ Was left recording for seven days straight with no problems
+ A very useful sticker on the back panel, containing all important product information
+ The hard drive stays nice and cool even after prolonged use
DISADVANTAGES
+ Very thin and flimsy top plate
+ Not at all impact resistant; will crack or chip when dropped from height of 1.5m onto a solid surface
+ Verbatim were very stingy with usb cable length. Only 1m usb cable is insufficient and makes it difficult to connect the hard drive in certain situations. Three meter usb cable would be far more appropriate
+ Power cable is slightly short as well. Doubling the length would be better
+ SPST toggle switch would be more appropriate rather than a round push switch
+ A built in fan would aid heat dissipation. However, since the hard drive always stays cool, this is not an issue
+ The green activity LED is hard to see at times, due to sloping angle of front plate
+ 1GB per 1.5 minutes writing speed is relatively slow compared to Verbatim hard drive with eSATA. Nevertheless, the price for Verbatim 1.5TB eSATA/usb hard drive goes up from 80 pounds to 118 pounds. In addition, old computers do not have eSATA port, therefore you would need eSATA adapter or eSATA dongle
+ Please remember due to large hard drive capacity, it may take a little while for computer to recognise it. So do not be afraid, if it is not recognised straight away
Won't restart after a power cut March 31, 2010 R. Brooksby 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This drive does not have an on/off switch, but a start/stop button. After the power is cut and restored it will NOT come on. This makes it a lot less useful for network attached storage, such as being attached to an Apple AirPort Extreme or a network fileserver.
Also, this drive makes a loud clicking when attached to the AirPort Extreme base station, though it seems to work. When asked, Verbatim Euro Support stated that they do not support using the drive except directly attached to your computer.
Verbatim 47513 1.5TB USB 2.0 Hard Drive - very pleased March 5, 2010 Meg learner (UK) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This hard drive was bought as a back up for my computer and it fills that role fantastically. It arrived quickly, with a few instructions and these were all easy to follow and WORKED. The hard drive worked straight out of the box.
While this is NOT a problem - it is just something to be aware of - my computer is an XP and over 3 years old. It took a while for the computer to "recognise" the enormous amount of empty space available on the new hard drive and I thought it was not going to work. It was just a question of waiting. This happened the second time too but after that, the computer now fires up, along with the Verbatim 47513 1.5TB USB 2.0 Hard Drive just as quickly as ever. My assumption is that my computer needed to "map" the new hard drive in some way and with such an enormous amount of territory, this just took some time.
One negative - the back up software did not work. But I was going to buy a back up software product anyway. Bought Acronis true image and that worked excellently with it. So now I have an external hard drive, and a back up of my computer. Happy Bunny.
