| Customer Reviews:
Does what it says on the tin. September 6, 2010 Simao (London) The problem started when I moved the router to a position behind the TV (Where all the action is) which resulted in signal dropping at the other end of the flat which wasn't so big but built had some concrete walls. A range extender was the solution and this one seemed to have some nice reviews.
I am the kind of usual computer users who have no real knowledge about networking, so when I saw the settings that some people where suggesting I was shocked. However, these reviwes are a bit old now and it seems that Edimax have made a newer version of thier range extender which comes with a program that makes life a bit easier and in which you only need to enter and IP for the range extender for I have used an IP just outside the range of my router (which I found by checking the advanced settings on my router) as one review suggested.
To be honest, despite the simplicity of the program setting up was still a bit of a challenge to me and by the end I got tired of trying it and made it work by making a direct ethernet connection between the range extender and the router using a powerline ethernet adaptor. Now everything works fine and at connctions speeeds comparable to a direct connection to the router.
Edimax range extender September 6, 2010 Richard We live in a Victorian house and struggle to get a wireless signal at the back of the house so needed this to boost our signal.
The instruction manual is not very clear, written by geeks for geeks, but I followed the instructions provided by the various contributors who had previously left feedback and it was pretty easy to install (I am reasonably computer literate) and works like a dream.
We now have a good signal throughout the house and the product sits in a corner and is hardly noticeable.
Edimax EW-7416APN September 3, 2010 iain After looking into my options to boost my WiFi signal to cover a large Stable Yard with several properties I decided to go for the Edimax EW-7416APN after reading the reviews. I have to say its been very impressive feeding from a BT Home Hub version 2 (curvy black one). The set up is fairly straight forward using the wizard and changing the IP address of your network adaptor etc, make sure you follow with care or you will end up wasting time and getting frustrated (as i did!!!!)
Its been up for about a week without a glitch providing the same speeds as if i was connected direct to the homehub, I can even stream internet stations to my Sony Bravia LCD without issues (i thought it may prove a pain in the arse due to IP addressing etc).
One thing to be aware of is I dont think it works with all wifi routers as I tried connecting to an existing router a 2wire 1800 (the BT HH2 was in the post) and although it connected it would drop the internet connection, i dont know if this was due to wifi signal as the 2wire isnt 'N' or another issue (the 2wire and edimax distance was only about 25 metres apart).
Now its connected to another 'n' router fingers crossed, just what i required...
Good but be patient August 26, 2010 Ray The setup disk that comes with the unit allows you to set it up as an access point, wireless range extender/repeater or a wireless receiver/bridge (so you can connect it up to your PS3 via the Ethernet port). Two things that must be mentioned are:
Firstly when setup in wireless range extender mode the download speed of any device connected to it is reduced significantly.
Secondly in my experience when the unit is setup in wireless receiver mode it should be given 20 minuets to sort its life out before expecting it to successfully connect to the internet. This will happen every time you turn it on and in wireless repeater mode it's worse and may require being re-setup before it can be used.
Other than that it works and hasn't dropped the signal once.
p.s. the power cable is 1.2m long making it difficult to put it in a high place.
